What a fantastic 'International Week'!  We managed to raise a phenomenal £463.26!!

International Week - Japanese Class, Written by a Year 8 Student

During Language and Culture week, a select amount of Year Sevens were invited to attend a Japanese maths abacus and origami lesson. Due to my love of Japanese, and that of a fellow Year 8, we got to go too! We learnt 2 origami patterns (some learnt 3) and occasionally were given some chocolate J.

After the origami session, we learnt abacus. It was quite simple and more efficient then a calculator. We learnt how to read the abacus and solve complex math with it. We were given a sheet of multiplications, adding, dividing and subtracting. Questions that would usually take a while to work out when written, the abacus was able to answer in under 2 minutes.

And finally, our names written in kanji, one of the 3 Japanese scriptures.

Miss Price thanks Jake Hemmings in Year 11 for teaching origami and Ms Everett for teaching abacus.

International Week – In the Eyes of a Year 8 Student

From 24th September to 29th September, at Beths we were delighted to be taking part in international week, a week full of events to do with many different nations and cultures. These events include:

  • Spanish Tapas Tasting
  • German Sausage Tasting
  • Mandarin Calligraphy
  • African Manga Games
  • Learning Basic Portuguese and
  • French Cheese Tasting

On Monday 24th September, I took part in Spanish Tapas Tasting. There they had a variety of different foods such as: Spanish meatballs, Paella, Chorizo, Pastas and much more. We then were offered a Spanish dessert.

On Tuesday 25th September, it was Learning Portuguese. We were fortunate to be able to have a Portuguese teacher come over from the University of Cambridge. Phrases that we learnt include how to say, “What is your name”, “Do you speak English” and “How old are you”. Also, we learnt 1-10 and how to answer the questions.

On Wednesday 26th September was the international dress up day, this was one of the most interesting days as you got to look around and see the diverse cultures in the school. In the afternoon you could go to the hall to get your picture taken and win prizes if you won the competition.

On Thursday 27th September, I went to the German Sausage Tasting. There was sauce to dip the sausage into as well as other types of sausage and cheese. A dessert was also given at this event and a type of drink.

Finally, on Friday 28th September was French Cheese tasting. At this event we were given a lot of different types of Cheese such as: Blue Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Brie and many more.

Overall this was a week filled with fun experiences as well as getting to know the cultures of many different countries, all the events were cultured inspired, so you could get a feel of how Spanish eat or Germans. Also, you got to learn there some of there language and games. This was a great experience for everyone who took part as they got to be part of the tradition the countries have and also enjoy it.

We celebrated International Week with a special ‘International Fancy Dress Day’ on Wednesday.  Students and staff came in wonderful outfits, from all over the world and from various cultures.  It was great to see lots of the school community participating and raising money for a fabulous charity, WaterAid.  Information on how much we raised will be posted on social media shortly, so please keep an eye out.

One of the best parts of this week was the food!  From Mexico to Japan, America to Germany, the food was amazing!  For more photos, check out our social media posts!

INTERNATIONAL FANCY DRESS DAY

Wednesday 26th September 2018

We will be celebrating International Week with a special ‘International Fancy Dress Day’.  Students and staff alike will be invited and encouraged to wear international clothing, whether it be from their own family or friends’ culture, a country they love or a key International figure.

In previous years, students have dressed up in a variety of guises from Frenchmen with berets and striped shirts to Mexicans in ponchos and sombrero hats.  Students have also worn the colours of a particular flag, the list is endless!

For participating in International Fancy Dress Day we ask that a small donation is made, (£1 is suggested) and the money raised will go to the charity WaterAid.  This is a fantastic international charity that seeks to ensure that people around the world have access to clean and safe water and sanitation.

INTERNATIONAL MENU

During our International Week, we will be serving various different cuisines in the Canteen for students and staff to enjoy.
