Inspiring Scholars Programme
Beths Grammar School Catch Up : Key Stages 3 and 4

Aims:

•    To deliver a range of high quality catch up learning programmes
•    To boost literacy at KS3/4
•    To impact GCSE and A level attainment both in 2021 and 2022

Principles:

•    Catch up lessons must contain high quality teaching and should be well planned to inspire both immediate and long term scholarship in our students
•    Catch up lessons must be measurable with pre and post assessment to measure impact
•    Catch up lessons must not replace normal lessons
•    Catch up lessons should be face-to-face even if this means delaying until summer term
•    Lessons should run for 8-10 weeks
•    Staff should be well paid but their engagement must not replace normal work activity
•    Students from disadvantaged backgrounds should be given first choice to enrol
•    Students from any background who the school was aware in June had struggled in lockdown will be given second priority (this will be determined using HOYs and Safeguarding team.
•    At KS5 catch up funding will be targeted at students with below age expected KS4 attainment in Maths and English.

Delivery

There will be a budget for each year group as follows:
Year 7      - Up to £10 000
Year 8      - Up to £10 000
Year 9      - Up to £10 000
Year 10    - Up to £10 000
Year 11    - Up to £10 000

The Head of Year will jointly manage the budget with the Key Stage Manager and it is up to them to target the best teachers to make a transformative impact on their year group securing funding proposals across the three phases.

Phase 1

This will run from September to April and has the aim of supporting students in major educational difficulties and those facing exams this year. Students will be selected based on trial exam data from Year 11 first mocks (Nov/Dec) and Year 13 mocks (Jan).  Each programme will be evaluated based on data in whole school assessment to measure impact.

Phase 2

This will target students from non-exam years and if there is not enough teachers with capacity we will look to boost the provision by recruiting tutors to work in parallel with teacher.

Phase 3

This will be the summer catch up programme which will run from 16th August for two weeks.

Process for creating programmes

Step 1 – HOY to draw up list of programmes and discuss with Key Stage Manager
Step 2 – teachers to be approached and invited to run programmes
Step 3 – proposal form to be authorised by Headteacher
Step 4 – Students placed to be allocated
